Delegates from the top Canadian colleges have participated in a seminar organized by Global Edu, a higher education consultancy based in Oman.
Delegates presented a rosy picture about the higher studies in Canada and audience, mostly Indian students who aspire for higher studies in foreign countries, very well received the advantages of Canada. Affordability was the one of the most talked-about aspect of higher studies in Canada. Canada is cheaper compared to Australia, the UK and the US as far as higher education concerned.
Overseas students prefer Canada because more work opportunities are available to them now. Previously, international students were allowed to work for one or two years, depending on location. Now, Canada has rolled out a new open work permit scheme to attract foreign students - a move that may lure away Indian students from their favorite destinations like the US, Britain and Australia.
Facing a shortage of skilled labor, the Government of Canada has taken two significant steps to assist foreign students who wish to remain in the country following their graduation. In April 2008, the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration announced that under the Post-Graduate Work Permit Program, foreign students would be allowed to apply for a three-year work permit from within the country, without having a job offer in hand, as long as they completed at least a two-year course of study. Students who had pursued a shorter course of study would be able to obtain a work permit for a length of time equal to that of the studies they pursued.
More than 90,000 students come to study in Canada every year and even more come to Canada to learn English or French.
