H H Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq al Said, Advisor to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, on Sunday, formally inaugurated the new building of Oman Dental College (ODC), the first and only dental college in the sultanate. The 6,300sq m institution is located in Wattayah.
“The college provides a nurturing and stimulating academic and clinical environment for training both Omani and expatriate professionals who will be able to enhance the provision of dental care in the country,’’ said Dr Mohammed al Ismaily, chairman, board of the directors, ODC.
In addition to latest cutting-edge dental simulator technology, diagnostic and clinical equipment, the new ODC building has a capacity for nearly 70 dental chairs in its outpatient facility. It offers dental care across all specialities including oral surgery, conservative dentistry and endodontics, prosthodontics, child dental health and orthodontics.
“The college and the Ministry of Health best exemplify the cooperation between private and government sectors. Our students undertake a component of their clinical training at some of the ministry’s outreach centres while the college currently accommodates the national tertiary dental services following the recent interim relocation of patients from Al Nahda Hospital,’’ he said.
Nairn H F Wilson, professor of dentistry, King’s College, London and chairman of ODC International Advisory Panel said, “Oman Dental College has the opportunity and potential to develop into a regional centre for excellence for dental education, advancements in oral healthcare provision and oral and dental research.’’
Dr Rahul Arora, dean, ODC, said, “A successful institution is not created by physical facilities alone but to a larger extent by the active participation of its individual stakeholders. Our greatest strength lies not just in the state-of-the-art clinical facility with almost 70 dental chairs, nor in the advanced clinical skills, simulator laboratory but rather through having a committed student body, ably guided by a high quality academic and clinical faculty of which nearly 70 per cent are Omani nationals.’’
The college trains Omani and expatriate students of 13 nationalities.
