Muscat: Oman is busily pushing forward its another big dream on higher education by establishing a new research-based University on Science and Technology.
A recently held meeting of the Steering Committee of Oman University project widely discussed the various aspects viz. the time schedule, stage of implementation and organisational structure of the project. On the outset of the ceremony, HH Sayyid Shihab, who is an advisor to the HH Sultan Qaboos bin Said and chaired the meeting, highlighted the importance of the project. He said the new university will be a significant addition to existing higher education institutions, with special focus on His Majesty’s vision for a specialised university in science and technology.
The institution will offer quality specialisations and programmes directly linked to development plans and modern and future projects in the Sultanate. It will give strong impetus to research and form solid foundations for scientific and learning at a high academic standard equal to that of international universities.
The Higher Education Ministry has taken several steps in the project, like finding an appropriate location and initial studies and general plans. The meeting approved the formation of the central executive committee, headed by the Higher Education Minister, and its duties and responsibilities.
The committee recommended the initiation of designs for the university’s emblem and stressed the importance of assigning the project to an international house of expertise to manage the project in all its stages. The committee also recommended the appointment of a consulting body to pursue the project’s progress.
