AUS celebrates 15 years

Sharjah: American University of Sharjah (AUS) has started its 15th anniversary celebration by honouring its staff, especially those who have been employed at the university since 1997. The ceremony was held recently at the university’s Main Plaza and was attended by more than 400 AUS staff.

Founded in 1997 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah and President of AUS, as a non-profit, independent, coeducational institution of higher education based on the American model, AUS has earned a fortunate reputation throughout the region for its academic excellence and multicultural campus life.

“We are here to honor your efforts in making this university, our AUS, what it is today. We are delighted to celebrate how each of you has contributed to AUS earning such a great reputation throughout the UAE and the wider region,” said Dr. Peter Heath, AUS Chancellor.

In his opening remarks, Chancellor Heath said, “In truth, this university is a great success. It enjoys the strong support of the AUS President, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qassimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.”

He also praised the efforts of the AUS Board of Trustees, administration, faculty, students and staff. “The board of trustees is engaged and hard-working. Our faculty, students and alumni are of high quality. All of these are links in a chain of university success. But your efforts and your enthusiasm for this university are essential links in the chain as well.”

Chancellor Heath said that an important reason that AUS receives the praise and recognition that it currently enjoys is “because each of you—every day of the year—works hard to see that we do succeed. Because of the contributions that you make—each and every day—AUS is on a continuous upward ascent in regard to quality and reputation.”

The anniversary celebration, which was part of the annual AUS Chancellor’s Award Ceremony, honored 23 employees who have worked at AUS for the past 15 years. Among these are Salem Yousuf Al Qaseer, Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs; Nada Mourtada-Sabbah, Vice Chancellor for Development and Alumni Affairs; and Lynda E. Ataya, Registrar. Others are Lena V. Hadajian, Vincent Mani, Mazin Elya, Vathukadan George, Lamaan Darkan, Falah Mohammad, Manoharan KPV, Sheckri Dagher, Emmanuel Pinto, Haji M. Ansar, Lina El-Khoury Bendaly, Muhammad Noor Aslam, Norbert Noronha, T.V. Rajagopal, Gayatri Chandru, Henry Pinto, Dorothy Moras, Hassan Abdalla, Mohamed Amerdeen and Michael Habib Zakher.

There were three winners of the Chancellor’s Award, with seven honorable mentions. The three Chancellor’s Award Winners were Vincent Mani, Medelyn Marasigan and Enas Tabakhah.

The seven employees receiving honorable mentions were Abdulla Muneer, Mohamed Kassim Ahamed, Raja Subramanya, Muhammad Ajaz, Achraf El Darbi, Anna Antar and Walid Dafallah. More than 70 prizes were also won by the staff.

Also attending were Dr. Thomas Hochstettler, AUS Provost; Dr. Ali Shuhaimy, Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management; Dr. Cleve McDaniel, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration; and other senior AUS officials.
