MUSCAT : Assessment of students is one of the important aspects of the educational process and Sultanate of Oman has decided to take a strong step onto this way. Education Minister Dr Madeeha bint Ahmed al Shaibaniyah said that Ministry of Education has decided to put in place the clear cut mechanism to achieve the result.
"The Royal directives of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos to set up the National Centre for Educational Assessment and Examinations with effect from the academic year 2011-2012 seek to develop the mechanism of measuring the assessment of students as one of the important aspects of the educational process."- said Education Minister Dr. Madeeha bint Ahmed Shaibaniyah.
Dr. Madeeha pointed out that the centre will enable the Ministry of Education from providing real indicators of evaluation and more accurate methods of measuring student performance for all the classes from 1 to 12. The centre will also help in analysing and resolving problems related to learning. The minister pointed out that the centre will benefit from international expertise and willl utilise the latest technology in the field of educational management.
Dr Madeeha explained that the centre is a link to the chain of educational process, which also involves the competence of teachers in introducing vocational programmes and building training capacities to help resolve all related problems and make learning an interactive process and a beneficial experience. The minister added that, according to the Royal directives, the vocational budget of the teaching staff and related jobs will be raised more than three folds. This, she said, will contribute positively to the motivation of students to maximise their own learning potential and gain knowledge and necessary skills for their educational growth. The centre comes as part of comprehensive development programmes, she added.
The minister noted that the Royal directives will enhance existing training programmes for teachers, supervisors and new school principals. It will also improve the ‘output’ of learning, considering that 6,176 new Omani teachers have joined the profession. The Ministry of Education values the precious directives of His Majesty to develop human resources, said the minister.
