Dr Spencer Salas, English language specialist and lecturer at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, conducted workshops for secondary school teachers in Ibri and Salalah. He also held a morning session for students and teachers at Sultan Qaboos University during his visit to Oman from December 10 to 21.
Participants in the week-long seminars explored principles and practices of participatory literacy instruction for secondary grades. The programme began with an overview of the theories on literacy.
The participants received hands-on practice in methods for helping adolescent learners understand texts. Issues specific to local teaching, learning, and professional development in Oman were also discussed, according to a statement.
Teachers in Ibri and Salalah welcomed the participatory training, which gave them new perspectives on teaching at secondary school. “During the five days, the teachers were equipped with knowledge and participated in different activities representing their insights and thoughts on how to be an effective teacher,” said a teacher.
