US ambassador to Oman on Oman education

You have been visiting educational institutions in Oman. What are your impressions?

I have been fortunate to see firsthand the high intellectual caliber and energy of students and professors in Omani institutions of higher learning. Whether studying nursing, accounting, or chemistry, they seem to see no limit to their future because they feel so well-prepared. In this respect, I was gratified to see that many of the instructors have received some of their education in American institutions and have returned home to share that knowledge with the next generation. To an ambassador, this bi-national cooperation is very encouraging.

The U.S. encourages Omani students to study in the US. How easy is it for students to get visa to study there? The number of Omanis traveling to the U.S. to study has increased the past two years. According to the Institute of International Education, in school year 2008–2009, the number of Omani students studying in the U.S. was 271. In 2009–2010, it was 286, an increase of 5.5 percent. As long as applicants follow all instructions in applying for a student visa, the process is quite simple. Detailed instructions are available at www.travel.state.gov

What is the number of U.S. researchers coming to Oman? This year we had the following new programs:
Every year we have from three to six Fulbright researchers, and three to five Fulbright students for research purposes as well.
