German students visiting Oman school

Nine students from Germany are visiting Oman as part of an exchange programme between Indian School Muscat (ISM) and Gymnasium IM Stift, Neuzelle, Brandenburg.  The programme, in its fourth year, aims to facilitate cultural and educational learning, said Achuthan Madhav, principal, ISM. The programme is expected to provide an opportunity to students to experience various cultures and become goodwill ambassadors of their countries. “Students learn to become more self-reliant,” said Madhav. “The students are visiting various tourist locations, besides participating in mutual understanding programmes,” said Jana Winkler, a teacher accompanying the visiting German students. “Under the programme, the students live in host houses, learn to share their beliefs and knowledge. This is an experience in itself which gives a better understanding of a culture and society,” she said. The team of students also visited the German Ambassador.

First American MBA college in Oman

The Modern College of Business and Science (MCBS) is going to launch the first American MBA programme in Oman. GU Tech creates GIS database for Oman

TheGUtech Oman , the German University of Technology in Oman, is working on creating a Geographic Information System (GIS) database for Oman and it would be used mainly by its students for study and research purposes.  GIS technologies are widely applied in education, health, tourism, special economic zone and in almost all the government departments and non-governmental organisations. Municipality and Oman’s various other government agencies have been successfully using applications of Geographic Information System (GIS) to improve work efficiency and service delivery systems, said Prof. Adrijana Car of Department of Sustainable Tourism and Regional Development at GUTech. The two-day long Oman-India Education conference was concluded on Monday 23 January. The conference titled "Education, Empowerment and Excellence", in which many experts on education participated, was succefully conducted by The Ministry of Education in coordination with Indian School Ghubra (ISG). The visiting Indian Minster of State for External Affairs and Human Resources Development E. SQU to strengthen ties with US college

A delegation from St Luke’s Episcopal Health System (SLEHS), Texas, USA , visited Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) on Monday. The delegation consisted of Chester Jones, Chairman of the Board, SLEHS, David J Fine, President and Chief Executive Officer, and two other senior officials. Dr. Said bin Ali al Yahyaee, SQU Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Community Service, Dr. Hilal al Sabti, Deputy Director General of SQU Hospital for Medical Affairs, and other SQU officials received the St. Luke's delegation.  The delegation discussed collaboration between SLEHS and SQU, according to a press release. US ambassador to Oman on Oman education

You have been visiting educational institutions in Oman. What are your impressions? I have been fortunate to see firsthand the high intellectual caliber and energy of students and professors in Omani institutions of higher learning. Whether studying nursing, accounting, or chemistry, they seem to see no limit to their future because they feel so well-prepared. In this respect, I was gratified to see that many of the instructors have received some of their education in American institutions and have returned home to share that knowledge with the next generation. To an ambassador, this bi-national cooperation is very encouraging. The U.S. encourages Omani students to study in the US. How easy is it for students to get visa to study there? The number of Omanis traveling to the U.S. to study has increased the past two years. 2 UAE girls were selected by NASA for higher education

Two female students from Petroleum Institute , Abu Dhabi were selected by NASA for research. Two girl students, Ms. Ghena Alhanee and Ms. Heyam Al Balushi, chosen from the Petroleum Institute were Mechanical Engineering students. This is part of a fellowship programme by Arab Youth VentureFoundation in UAE. The organisation had signed an agreement with NASA to allow UAE nationals to take part in research at NASA. The agreement which was started in 2012, is now in its final year.  They have been selected as part of UAE/NASA Research Fellows for the Spring 2012 semester. Three sessions, which take place every year (Spring, Summer and Fall), allow qualifying students in the field of engineering and science-related disciplines to conduct research at NASA. US Embassy honoured Omani teachers

Muscat: The US Embassy to Oman lately honoured participants of their e-teacher course including 10 Omanis. During the ceremony, US Ambassador to Oman H.E. Richard J. Schmierer congratulated the e-teachers for their participation in the programme. "We are happy to provide Omani teachers this opportunity to further train themselves as part of the partnership between the US and the Sultanate"- by distributing the certificate, he said. E-teacher course which improves English language proficiency was mainly focusing on non-native English speakers. Public affairs officer patricia Atkinson also welcomed the teachers and highlighted the significance of the programme in developing English language teaching all over the world.  Currently e-teacher programme offers seven online graduate-level courses. US Embassy language workshop in Ibri and Salalah

A two week-long workshops on English Language Programme held at Ibri and Salalah. The workshop was jointly hosted by the US Embassy and the Ministry of Education concluded in Muscat recently. Dr Spencer Salas, English language specialist and lecturer at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, conducted workshops for secondary school teachers in Ibri and Salalah. He also held a morning session for students and teachers at Sultan Qaboos University during his visit to Oman from December 10 to 21. Participants in the week-long seminars explored principles and practices of participatory literacy instruction for secondary grades. The programme began with an overview of the theories on literacy. The participants received hands-on practice in methods for helping adolescent learners understand texts. Indus' India Education show concludes

Fifth edition of the India education meet and seminar was concluded on a happy note on Wednesday, 17 January 2012 as thousands of students from Oman attended the show. Major choice of the students, most of them were Indian expatriates, were MBBS and various engineering courses. More than 500 Omanis opt to study in Malaysia each year

Oman is among the countries that have the highest number of students studying in Malaysia, and the number is expected to increase gradually, according to the Malaysian Embassy. “More than 500 students from Oman go to Malaysia for education each year. It is becoming a preferred education destination due to its multi-cultural diversity and the free way of life. We hope the number will increase as we are intensifying the promotional programmes,” Mohd Norhisyam bin Mohd Yusof, Charge d’Affaires at the Malaysian Embassy, told.  He was speaking on the sidelines of a two-day exhibition aimed at promoting educational services in Malaysia that began on Tuesday, 17 January 2012. “Right now, we are focusing on promoting postgraduate and research programmes, and by 2020, Malaysia hopes to become the educational hub of the region. This can be attributed to affordability, and also to the fact that the quality of education is be the same as that in British and Australian universities.

Taiwan look into Oman vocational training market

Taiwanese companies could help with vocational training across a range of engineering fields - even starting with training Omanis at Voltamp's new Sohar plant, according to Jackson T C Lee, representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Muscat. In the second Taiwanese joint venture in the GCC, Voltamp has linked up with Taiwanese electronics and engineering company Tatung to provide both technology and manpower for Voltamp's new RO11mn factory. Speaking at the Taiwanese National Day celebrations, Lee told that the tie-up could open the door for further co-operation between the two companies in vocational training. “If they want to co-operate with Tatung in vocational training, they can help with more efficient Omani manpower to satisfy Omanisation needs. “Maybe in future we could reach out and provide this training across all engineering fields, so we could even hopefully provide a manpower help-centre."

Dutch panel targets Oman's vocational training projects

A delegation of Dutch designers and builders focusing on the construction of education and training centres arrived in Muscat in order to tap into Oman's growing need for vocational training. With RO27.2mn set aside for national training projects and RO26.9mn earmarked for establishing and maintaining technical colleges and vocational training projects in the Eighth Five Year plan, the Oman government is aiming to build the vocational skills of its domestic workforce. The two deals, on vocational training and small and medium enterprises, will see the two governments co-operating on building the sultanate’s vocational training capacity - and linking it to the creation of new businesses.

Singapore keen on investing in vocational training

Vocational training and the IT sector are the key themes of discussion for a top-level Singaporean government delegation, which has arrived in the sultanate to take part in the tenth Singapore-Oman joint committee meeting. The 17-member delegation comprising of businesses, ministerial officials and Singaporean regional development agencies held meetings at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) and Knowledge Oasis Muscat as it eyes further investment opportunities in Oman.

GU Tech prof award in Germany

Professor Burkhard Rauhut , currently rector of the GermanUniversity of Technology, Oman (GU Tech), has been awarded the Theodor Berchem Prize in Germany. The recipient of the award was chosen by an international jury. The award is worth around 5,000 OR. Professor Rauhut has been rector of GU Tech since 2008. The honour was bestowed on him for his international and intercultural work and his achievements in the academic sphere.  The Theodore Berchem Prize bears the name of Prof. Theodor Berchem, the long-standing President of the German Academic Exchange Service(DAAD) .
