The number of scholarships offered to Omani students by India has been raised to 150. The scholarships are offered under a bilateral assistance programme. Indian ambassador to Oman J S Mukul stated "In 2011-12, the number of scholarships under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme was only 50. Now, from April 1, it will become 150, which will be a 200 per cent increase”.
The ITEC Programme is a bilateral assistance programme run by the Indian government. The scholarships come under this demand-driven programme that focuses on addressing the needs of developing countries through innovative technological cooperation. The programme began in 1964 and now offers innovative forms of technical cooperation.
Munir Said Al Breiki, a next generation network expert at Omantel who did an advanced course in India remarked "Courses offered through the ITEC are quite beneficial for the Omanis. Learning experience in India was quite useful. It is helping me a lot in my current job. I urge more Omanis to make use of these kinds of scholarships".
