The three-day event, GHEDEX, TRAINEX and JOBEX 2014, was inaugurated by Her Highness Dr Muna bint Fahd Al Said, assistant vice-chancellor for external cooperation of the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), at the Oman International Exhibition Centre.
Around 140 educational institutions from 20 countries are showcasing opportunities for Omanis and expatriates in the fair which will continue till tomorrow. It will be open from 9:30am to 1:30pm and 5:00pm to 9:00pm.
Abdul Hameed, a student of the SQU, told the Times of Oman that he was visiting the fair just to know about opportunities for short term vocational courses in Europe. "I am trying for an educational loan for a short term vocational training abroad. I hope that this exhibition would help me find some answers," he said.
Alongside this, Oman's premier government and private higher educational institutions, universities and colleges from UK, Malaysia, Ireland, Oman, the USA, Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, India, Jordan, Korea, Malta, New Zealand, Netherlands, Russia, Turkey, Sri Lanka and the UAE are also attracting students.
Manal Al Kindi, who has already applied for admissions in government institutions for graduation programme, said that this exhibition would help her understand the kind of courses available all across Oman. "If I like, I would be able to change my choices for the programmes and universities which I have already applied for," she said.
In the fair, among the Omani educational institutions present, were Higher College of Technology, Majan College, Dhofar University and Sohar University.
Some colleges are also introducing scholarship schemes. Mazoon College is offering two full scholarships excluding a General Foundation Programme, and four 50 per cent paid for scholarships which include two in business administration and physiology and two in general foundation programme.
Sohar University has announced six free training programmes, three each in English and Computer.
Similarly, the Majan College is offering one full scholarship including a general foundation programme and one training programme in English language for intermediate level.
