Osmania University degrees "blacklisted" by recruiters in Gulf

HYDERABAD: If you are a graduate from Osmania University(OU), India, you may receive a blunt rejection from the HR manager of Gulf countries. Shocking news is out that Osmania University distance education and regular degrees have been blacklisted in several middle-east countries including Iran and UAE. 


But Higher Education authorities of these countries have not made any official announcements in this regard.

Scores of OU students, including foreigners have been refused jobs in the United Arab Emirates and Iran. "OU is blacklisted because these students do not have the basic standards required to perform well in a job," a manager in a Dubai-based recruitment agency said.

The Osmania University (OU) is a public state university located in Hyderabad, India, and founded in 1918 with the help of chief Architect of Mahbub Ali Khan - Nawab Sarwar Jung. It was established and named after the last Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan. It is the first Indian university to have Urdu as a medium of instruction.

In 2012, the university was placed sixth among the Nation's Premier Universities in Humanities, Sciences and Commerce stream, which bagged the 'University with Potential for Excellence' status.The Main Campus is ranked tenth among the State Universities, as published by India Today. As of 2012, the university hosts 3,700 international students from more than 80 nations.

The OU is one of the largest university systems in the subcontinent with over 300,000 students on its campuses and affiliated colleges. It is particularly known for its faculty of Engineering and Technology, Law, Arts, Sciences, Commerce and Management departments.

Gems Education, which recruits young job aspirants said OU is blacklisted in UAE as the distance education and regular courses offered by the university is not recognised on technical grounds. Deepika, HR person from Gems Education has said that Gems team in UAE has blacklisted OU.


Students with bachelor of communication and journalism degrees as well as masters in communication and journalism degrees have also been facing problems with Iranian authorities, as the country does not recognise the degrees.

Many students who obtain their post graduate degrees from OU, apply for jobs in Dubai and Iran. Similarly, students from Dubai and Iran enroll themselves for a post graduate degree in Osmania University.

Recently, three students from OU who had applied for the UAE-based Gems Education, were rejected by the management saying their degrees are not recognised.


Students say their fate is sealed due to the same certificates issued for both distance and regular courses.

OU authorities, however, said they were not aware of the blacklisting by UAE. "The country has not intimated us. I will verify the matter, write to the academic council of the varsity and resolve the issue once it is out in the open. If the countries want us to distinguish between the regular and distance mode courses in the certificates issued, we could consider that for the benefit of students," Bhikshamaiah, controller of examinations, Osmania University said. Countries and job recruitment agencies should have written to him for clarification on the issue, he added.

Second Pakistani University opens in UAE
