Story of a B-Tech engineer’s love for music

Passion is one where everybody wants to plunge in. You may be forced to pursue alien paths in life. But your passion may be just opposite to that. Whatever, if you do a bit of research, you will get a path.

Higher education is a world you have to choose carefully. That can lead you to peace and prosperity. Why I write this now is when I got a letter from a parent who is suffering from his son’s adamant approach to pursue a programme in music. As a parent he is not against music. But the thing is that, his son is an engineer. He had done his B-Tech from a premier tech-college of India- NIT. Now the son is working as an electrical engineer in a good firm in Bahrain. He draws around Rs.1 lakh per month. This is a good salary for a student who just now starts his career. But now the son wants to pursue his private passion- Music. He is an ardent music lover. His first few months salary was spent for setting up a studio at home. He bought few good expensive instruments and music equipments also lately. Now he wants to resign from this job and would like to pursue music as his destiny. But what to do?

My advice is that his son is now 25 years old. He is capable enough to decide his future. Fathers fear is true. Music does not provide a stable career. Musicians shelf life is too short. But apart from the creative musician there are plenty of music-tech jobs are available in the market.

Audio Engineering

Audio engineering may be a nice path here. As he has an engineering background and passion towards music, Audio Engineering will be an ideal option. Audio Engineering deals with all aspects of sound and its manipulation for television, radio, music and other audio/video presentations.

Courses in Audio Engineering provide understanding of methods to record and manipulate sound. These courses include projects to provide hands-on training to use the editing software and state-of-art equipment.

Audio Engineering is an interdisciplinary science. Long-term courses like the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses approach the subject from both technological and creative angles. The curriculum of these courses is a blend of concepts from electrical engineering, software applications, audio technology and music.

If you are interested in a specific area under Audio Engineering, you can pursue a short-term specialised course in that area. For instance, certificate, diploma and PG diploma courses are available in sound mixing, sound editing, audio recording, audio production, and multimedia.

An MS programme in Audio Engineering covers subjects like music production, sound editing, electronics and filters, audio and multimedia, and dubbing and multi-channel mixing.

Audio engineers find employment in music industry, film and television industry, recording studios, broadcast networks, game development industry, animation industry, event management industry and so on. Some of the roles audio engineers can assume are sound engineer, broadcast technician, audio engineer, transmission engineer, CD and DVD mastering engineer, mixing engineer, production assistant, sound editor, theatre sound technician and sound editor.

The following are some of the courses related to Audio/Sound Engineering:

Why You Should Not Opt For IIT Bombay

This article is written by IITians in the blog Actors Imran and Anushka during a cultural program at IIT Bombay If asked to compare IIT Bombay to IIT Delhi, most students say that the difference is negligible. Both are in metropolitan cities with good options for hostels, PG accommodations, food and entertainment. Cultural activities are equally good as is the faculty and study methodology. Even placements at the two IITS are amongst the best in the country. Yet figures indicate that the top JEE rank holders prefer Computer Science Engineering at IIT Mumbai rather than IIT Delhi. But, we are here to tell you when and why you can avoid IIT Mumbai. Mumbai IIT was earlier placed in the suburbs, away from the crowds, giving IITians the space and peace to pursue their career goals. Today the area in Powai is surrounded by high rise building, malls and traffic snarls, bringing with it all the clatter and patter of a metropolitan hub. Just like the population and popular
