Oman can be proud of this female professor

Muscat: The name of Dr. Salma M. Al Kindy, a professor with the Department of Chemistry of the College of Science at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), has become a history for a while. When she has been elected as a fellow of Third World Academy of Science (TWAS), the social media networks in Oman has brimmed with showers of praise towards Salma. TWAS is a merit based science academy in Trieste, Italy which uniting 1,000 exceptional scientists in some 70 countries around the world.

Salma is the first Omani national to be elected as a fellow in this prestigious non-profit organisation that stands for development of science in the Third World countries. To be selected as a fellow is a rare feat and goes to only scientists who live and work in developing countries and have made considerable contributions to their fields of science.

As the election as a TWAS fellow is based purely on scientific merit, it is generally hailed as a new dawn of science in Oman. Salma's achievement has debunked the long-held myth that the middle-eastern countries will always stay far away from the scientific excellence. Only those scientists who have made excellent contributions to the advancement of science in their chosen fields of specialisation and have attained the highest international standards and recognition can be nominated as fellows or associate fellows.

Salma does not like to make it a cloud nine moment and prefers to keep her modest mind by saying: “To be the first Omani national from SQU appointed as a Fellow of the Academy means a great deal to me at both professional and personal levels".
