edX to teach IIT-Bombay programmes

Mumbai, (India): edX, a popular Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform, will teach two online programmes from IIT-Bombay. And it is believed that these two programmes from IIT-Bombay will be start teaching from next month, from July 29 onwards, by edX.

It is the first time an Indian programme found place in edX. With this already reputed Indian Technology brand, IIT, will get another lift in global platform. edX is the online platform founded by Harvard and (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)MIT.

Right now, 47 global institutes, corporates and non-profit organizations(NGOs) are associated with the edX MOOC. This is first time an institute from India partnering with edX on MOOC. Now edX offers 176 courses online and there are dedicated 2.1 million users to receive it.

The two professors, Deepak B. Phatak and Udau N Gaitonde, from IIT-Bombay came to limelight with this programmes. The programme ‘introduction to computer programming’ was designed by Prof Deepak B Phatak while a programme on ‘thermodynamics’ was designed by Prof Udau N Gaitonde. Prof. Deepak B. Phatak’s programme will be taught as two parts- first one on July 29 and the second one on September 23. 


"India is an important market for us, and is home to the largest population of edX learners outside of the United States," said Anant Agarwal, CEO, edX. 

Registrations for these courses have started, and more than 35,000 learners worldwide have already registered for the three courses, the press statement said. Students who register for these courses, will have the option to either audit the course for free (with complete access to all course material, tests, and online discussion forum), or pursue a Verified Certificate of Achievement for about Rs 1,500 ($25).

IIT Bombay

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B or IIT Bombay) is a public engineering institution located in Powai, Mumbai, India. It has been ranked among the top engineering colleges in India. It is the second-oldest institute of the Indian Institutes of Technology system.

IIT Bombay was founded in 1958. In 1961, the Parliament decreed IITs as Institutes of National Importance. IIT Bombay has a comprehensive graduate program offering doctoral degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.Currently IIT Bombay has a total of 14 academic departments, six centers, one school, and three interdisciplinary programmes.



Over the last 53 years, around 39,000 engineers and scientists have graduated from the institute.It is globally recognized for its quality education and strong research programs. Admissions are made through national competitive entrance examinations, considered to be the toughest in India. The research program in Education Technology attempts to evolve the most effective learning-teaching processes. The Centre for Distance Engineering Education Program (C-DEEP), handles much of the outreach activities.

Second Pakistani University opens in UAE
