This time Keralites, V. Sriram and Alby John Varghese secured second and fourth ranks respectively. These two toppers are doctors; Dr. Sriram is doing his PG programme at a hospital in Cuttack, Orissa, and Dr. Varghese works at a public health centre at Kunnukara, near Paravoor.
ADGP Prisons, Alexander Jacob, who is a civil services trainer, told that around 50 candidates from Kerala appear to have found a place in the rank list.
This time some Civil Services training centres of Kerala also came into the limelight. By netting three of the top five ranks, including the first, Kerala State Civil Service Academy at Kowdiar in Thiruvananthapuram has emerged as the best among them. A total of 38 students from the academy made it to various services this year, the largest number so far. “We give methodological training to our students. This combine with their hard work is the mantra for this success” - says U. Subhash, the director of the Institute, figuring out the secret of success. This academy was founded in 2005 by the state government under the continuing education department. Academy provides free training to the students who clear the preliminary examination. Candidates who secure a birth for interview will be provided with free flight ticket to Delhi and free accommodation at Kerala house, Delhi.
Naipunya academy, under the guidance of Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese, in Kochi has also added laurels by contributing many Civil Services rank holders this year. This time, the general notion that the civil service examination is tough to crack for Keralites has also changed. But still Kerala is far behind Delhi. If you consider the top 25 ranks, the 12 ranks gone to Delhi while Kerala has only 4 top ranks.
Now more and more malayalis are coming into the bandwagon of the civil service examinations. Now Haritha has made it clear that born as a Keralite is not at all a roadblock to clinch civil services top rank. But everybody has to keep in mind the advice of the first rank holder, Haritha V. Kumar that it is hard, systematic work and unwavering dedication- and not much by way of brilliance- is what it takes to succeed in the civil services examination.
Over 2.71 lakh candidates appeared in the civil services (preliminary), 2012. Of them, 13,092 qualified for the main examination held in October, 2012, of which 2,674 candidates were selected for the personality test conducted in March-April 2013.
