KOCHI: Kerala Government has taken initial steps to set up maritime institutes in the state.
The Government has taken initial steps in this regard to open two such institutes in Neendakara in Kollam and Kodungallur.
Though Kochi is a major port city on the western coast of India by the Arabian Sea, Government could not consider of setting up a maritime institute until now. Commercial maritime facilities of the city include the port of Kochi, an International Container Transshipment Terminal, the Cochin Shipyard, offshore SPM of the Kochi Refineries and the Kochi Marina. After the establishment of the Vallarpadam Container Terminal, immense career opportunities are developing in the maritime sector.

The Chief Minister has laid the foundation stone for the project for which the Government is envisaging initial investment of nearly Rs 25 crore. DGS-approved courses at the institute are expected to commence in 2015.
Euro Tech Maritime Academy, Univan Maritime Academy, Institute of Marine Engineers (India), CUSAT- these are the major institutes in Kochi where various academic programmes on Maritime and Marine Engineering are being taken place with the approval from Director General of Shipping.
