Sharjah: Four outstanding students at American University of Sharjah (AUS) have won the prestigious Sheikh Khalifa Scholarships for the upcoming academic year, university officials announced, yesterday, May 9.
The winners of the 2012–2013 Sheikh Khalifa Scholarships were: Shiham Syed, College of Arts and Sciences; Juhi Chanchalani, School of Business and Management; Waleed Hijazi College of Engineering; Shaima Rizvi College of Architecture, Art and Design.
Annually, AUS students who excel academically and show individual leadership skills and distinguished societal service, as well as other non-curricula merits, win the Sheikh Khalifa scholarship. Each college nominates students for the award and an academic panel chooses the winners.
The scholarship funds come from the revenues of a Dhs.10 million donation by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, to AUS during a visit to the Sharjah University City in 2005.
AUS Chancellor Dr. Peter Heath expressed his gratitude for Sheikh Khalifa's support to the university and the higher education in UAE. He congratulated and praised the winners for their hard work and perseverance. "You should be proud of what you have achieved. The scholarship is one way to express our appreciation of students and award them for their hard work," said Chancellor Heath.
According to Juhi Chanchalani, School of Business and Management winner, her journey has just started. “Winning the Sheikh Khalifa Scholarship is one of my biggest dreams come true, and it has been converted to be a stepping stone for more achievements.”
Waleed Hijazi, College of Engineering winner, said, “This scholarship is an achievement and it opens the door for other challenges in maintaining it.”
Shiham Syed, College of Arts and Sciences winner, thanked Allah for blessing her with the opportunity to make her family proud of her. “This achievement has taught me to never give up my dreams,” she said.
“I am incredibly thankful for receiving this scholarship. I like pushing myself academically, so this scholarship is great for that. I just hope I can live up to what this award stands for,” said Shaima Rizvi, College of Architecture, Art and Design winner.
The four students have an excellent academic standing and participation in extracurricular activities. The latter include taking part in cultural events and student clubs; international competitions; student organizations; and volunteer work.
