The seminar was held at the Muscat Hall auditorium situated at the headquarters of the Ministry of Higher Education in Muscat on September 3. The QS representative for the Middle East, Mr Ashwin Fernandes, delivered the half-day seminar. Universities from all provinces of the sultanate, such as far off places like Salalah, Sohar, Nizwa etc attended the seminar and were keen to learn more about QS; a total of 70 representatives were present.
The undersecretary of Higher Education, His Excellency Dr Abdullah Al Sarmi, graced the seminar.
Also present were representatives from the Sultan Qaboos University—the vice chancellor, His Excellency Dr Ali Al-Bemani, and the assistant vice cancellor for external cooperation, Her Highness Dr Mona bint Fahad Al–Said—along with officials from the Ministry of Higher Education and the Oman Academic Accreditation Authority (OAAA).
Fernandes gave a very thorough understanding on the QS World University Rankings and each of the 6 indicators, explaining how universities can join the rankings, maintain their rank. He thereafter presented an analysis of the performance of Sultan Qaboos University in the ranking and invited questions from the audience. He also presented about QS Stars, which is a global standard introduced by QS to evaluate universities and has over 51 indicators.
Fernandes also presented various means by which Omani universities can gain international recognition through QS Oman’s Ministry of Higher Education holds
A few days after the seminar, the global launch of the QS World University Rankings 2013/14 was held in Turkey, Istanbul, during which it was revealed that Sultan Qaboos University had dropped in its rankings this year too. In an exclusive statement, the head of QS Intelligence Unit, Ben Sowter, observed that most institutions in the Middle East featured in the QS World University Rankings 2013/14 have dropped in rank this year.
