CAT, XAT, MAT, JMET, SNAP, NMAT and GMAT- other doors to B-schools

CMAT is one of the aptitude tests in India for getting admitted to the MBA programmes conducted by Indian B-schools. All Business schools in India have a written aptitude test as the first stage of screening applicants. This written test will be followed by personal interview and Group discussion/essay writing.

The six IIMs(Indian Institute of Management), which are known as India's premier B-schools, conduct a common admission test which is popularly known as CAT. Other well-reputed B-schools include S.P. Jain Management college (Mumbai) and NITIE(Mumbai), Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad and Management Development Institute are considering CAT score for their admissions.

Other popular aptitude tests for B-school admissions are Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) conducted by XLRI, Jamshedpur.

Finally, there is the Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) for students seeking admission to the two-year full time Postgraduate Degree Program in Management offered by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.

Usually conducted every quarter by the All India Management Association (AIMA), the Management Aptitude Test (MAT) invites more than 200,000 students annually offering them an opportunity for admission into some 450 management institutes spread across the country.

MAT is the test conducted by Center for Management Services (CMS) division of All India Management Association (AIMA) for 4 times in a year. The scores of the candidates can be used to get admission to various B-schools as well as various management institutes that are tied with AIMA.This entrance test has been approved by the Ministry of HRD of the Government of India for admission to the various MBA/PGDM programs , including MCA, on All India basis.

The Narsee Monjee Management Admission Test (NMAT), a test for entry to one of the foremost management institutes in India, The Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), a famous management school in India, sees thousands of applicants trying their luck every year.

Globally renowned management school, Amity University conducts their exclusive entrance test which is known as AET. Students who qualify the AET have to appear for an interview on the Amity Campus.

FMS intakes over 226 students every year in MBA full-time programme and MBA (MS) programme. In 2012, as Delhi University did not give permission to conduct separate entrance, FMS has decided to depend CAT score as their admission criteria.

The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) was set up in 1963 by the Government of India. This institute was established as an autonomous organisation to help professionalize the country’s foreign trade management. It is known to be one of the prestigious business school of India . Last year approximately 63,000 candidates applied for just 180 seats.

Many top business schools also accept GMAT scores as entry points. The advantage of a GMAT score is that it can be 'banked' as it is valid for five years. A standardized test delivered in English, the GMAT is globally accepted. It is said that IIMs also considers GMAT score. Other reputed B-schools which accept GMAT scores are Indian School of Business, Hyderabad and MDI. Gurgaon. But the GMAT is still not very popular with Indian students seeking admission into Indian business schools mainly because of the high cost of the test.

An MBA is a very prestigious qualification as it offers the potential for talented young professionals to showcase their skill sets to secure a high-paid job. India's IIMs are still attracting some of the most prestigious and highest paying recruiters in the world. As MBA still guarantee a better job and a coveted career, the demand for business school education and an MBA degree is growing and still carries a lot of weight.

Why You Should Not Opt For IIT Bombay

This article is written by IITians in the blog Actors Imran and Anushka during a cultural program at IIT Bombay If asked to compare IIT Bombay to IIT Delhi, most students say that the difference is negligible. Both are in metropolitan cities with good options for hostels, PG accommodations, food and entertainment. Cultural activities are equally good as is the faculty and study methodology. Even placements at the two IITS are amongst the best in the country. Yet figures indicate that the top JEE rank holders prefer Computer Science Engineering at IIT Mumbai rather than IIT Delhi. But, we are here to tell you when and why you can avoid IIT Mumbai. Mumbai IIT was earlier placed in the suburbs, away from the crowds, giving IITians the space and peace to pursue their career goals. Why I write this now is when I got a letter from a parent who is suffering from his son’s adamant approach to pursue a programme in music. As a parent he is not against music. But the thing is that, his son is an engineer. He had done his B-Tech from a premier tech-college of India- NIT. Now the son is working as an electrical engineer in a good firm in Bahrain. He draws around Rs.1 lakh per month. This is a good salary for a student who just now starts his career. But now the son wants to pursue his private passion- Music. He is an ardent music lover. His first few months salary was spent for setting up a studio at home. He bought few good expensive instruments and music equipmen
